How we support students

Support is part of the school day

Students here learn in different ways, so the day bends to fit them. This is what happens, in plain words.

  • Reading groups

Students read with a teacher at a low table, at a level and pace that fits each reader.

  • Extra time

Anyone can have more time on a piece of work. Teachers plan for it before the lesson, not after.

  • A quiet room

A small room stays open all day for a break or for work that needs less noise.

  • A visiting specialist

A specialist visits one day each week to work with teachers and with students who want the extra help.

The day opens with a morning meeting and reading groups. Math comes in short lessons with a teacher at the table.

  • Midday

    Lunch and a long break

A long lunch, time outdoors in most weather, and the quiet room open for anyone who wants it.

  • Afternoon

    Projects and a read-aloud

Science, writing and art projects, then a story read aloud before dismissal.

What families tell us

“We visited on a Tuesday and sat in on a morning. The room was quiet, the group was small, and the teacher asked our daughter what she likes to read.”

Julianne P.Parent of a fifth grader

“At his old school there were thirty in a room. Here the teachers know how he likes to work, and they tell us what they notice.”

Monet L.Parent of a sixth grader

“The head of school sat with us for an hour and never rushed. We left knowing what a day looks like and who we would talk to.”
